Agnes Spain

September 23, 1920 — April 1, 2012

Agnes Jennings Spain of Colonial Heights, Virginia, joined her beloved husband, Rev. Charles E. Spain, Jr., in Heaven on April 1, 2012. She was born in Appomattox, Virginia on September 23, 1920, to Fannie and Parks Jennings. She married Charlie on August 17, 1943. Agnes Spain has served the Lord her entire life, having accepted Jesus as her Savior at the age of 5. She graduated from Appomattox High School; Farmville State Teacher's College (Longwood University), attended New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and received her Master's Degree in Elementary Education from Virginia State College. One of her many loves was teaching first grade. Being married to a minister / missionary, Agnes spent much time working side by side with her husband in his ministries in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Virginia and New York. Among the many foreign mission endeavors included serving in the countries of Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador. Mrs. Spain has been a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Colonial Heights, Virginia, since 1958 and has attended Oakland Baptist Church, Disputanta, Virginia, for the past four years while living with her daughter, Agnes Anne. When she was unable to attend, she enjoyed being able to "go to church" at Grove Avenue Baptist by means of television. Agnes was predeceased by her husband, Charles E. Spain, Jr.; as well as her two sons, Ashton and Charles III; her sister, Frances J Dyess; and her two brothers, George Jennings (Ellen) and Dr. Thomas Jennings (Eileen). She is survived by her four daughters, Agnes Anne Mumford (Hugh), Charlene Thompson (Larry), Carolyn Tomik, and Nancye Kershner (Phil); her grandchildren, Michael Mumford (Jaclyn), Phillip Mumford (Gwen), Stephanie M. Smeir (Issam), John Tomik (Melissa), Cynthia Peerand-Tomik (Zach), David Tomik (Ruta), Alicia Tomik, Matt Thompson, Jonathan Kershner, Stephen Kershner; nine great-grandchildren with one more on the way; brothers-in-law, Monroe Dyess of Appomattox, Virginia, James Spain of Princeton, West Virginia, and Richard Spain (Barbara) of Atlanta, Georgia. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Crater Community Hospice for their love, support and compassionate care. They were such a blessing to her and made her final journey a peaceful one. We would especially like to thank Mrya Betts, her Hospice Aide, who cared for her with such dignity and respect. A Service of Praise and Gratitude for the life of Mrs. Spain will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 6, 2012 in Immanuel Baptist Church, Colonial Heights, Virginia. Burial will follow in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg, Virginia. The family will receive family and friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 5,, 2012 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard.
