Alexander Claiborne Ogburn Jr., known to many as “Snookie” of North Dinwiddie, passed away Friday, March 21, 2025. He was born on May 27, 1928, to the late Alexander Sr., and Pauline Starnes Ogburn. He is predeceased by his beloved and devoted wife, Mercer Storey Ogburn, and his brother-in-law, Robert Foster.

Claiborne was a man who loved his God, loved his family, loved his church, and loved people. He was a devoted member of Elm Street Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as a trustee, deacon, Sunday school teacher, choir member, van driver, and sang with a church quartet. He also sang with many community church groups; he was very passionate about music. He owned Ettrick Chevron Station, which was formerly Ettrick Gulf Station. Claiborne was an avid freshwater and saltwater fisherman. He participated in many bass fishing tournaments and even won a number of them. He volunteered at Petersburg Hospital, and loved gardening, playing golf, and hunting. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought him much joy.

He is survived by his daughters, Judy Reeves (Jim), and Joan Chandler (Buddie); sister, Alice Foster; grandchildren, Jason Reeves, Justin Reeves (Lindsey), Buddie Chandler III (Ashley), Matthew Chandler (Christina), and Amy Varney (Josh); great-grandchildren, Tucker Reeves, Bodhi Reeves, Duke Reeves, Crew Reeves, Julianna Chandler, Caleb Chandler, Levi Chandler, Isaiah Chandler, Micah Chandler, Emma Varney, Anna Varney, Kate Varney, and Henry Varney; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 27, 2025, at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory 2033 Boulevard Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834 with the Reverend Jim Reeves officiating. Interment will follow in Blandford Cemetery Petersburg, Virginia. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.
