Alexander Westmoreland Jr.

April 15, 1924 — August 20, 2012

Alexander Martin Westmoreland Jr., 91, of Colonial Heights, passed away Monday, August 20, 2012 at his residence. Born in Richmond, he was the son of the late Alexander M. Westmoreland Sr. and Bessie Sutton Westmoreland, and was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Blalock Westmoreland, a daughter, Barbara Jo Westmoreland and a granddaughter, Erin Marie Hingerty. He was a member of Highland United Methodist Church, a veteran of the United States Army having served during World War II, a recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Battle Star. After 38 years of service, he retired from Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company as a Superintendent. Mr. Westmoreland was a lifetime member of the Colonial Heights American Legion Post #284, Colonial Heights V.F.W., Colonial Heights Senior Golf Association, Past President of the Southside Sheltered Workshop, and Past President of the Colonial Heights Civitan Club. An avid lover of baseball, he was scouted by the Boston Red Sox, but was drafted by the Army, the wounds received during the war prevented him from pursuing that lifelong dream. He is survived by two daughters, Betty Joy McElfish of Colonial Heights and Janet Westmoreland Koren and husband, John of South Chesterfield; six grandchildren, Steven McElfish, Kenneth McElfish, Melissa Leninger, Lacey Park, Carley Cornett and Erik Hingerty; eight great-grandchildren, Lauren, Gabrielle, Cody, Brian, Collin, Ethan, Kaelyn, Micayla; and a longtime devoted friend, Mary Netzley. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 24, 2012 in the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard with the Reverend Bill Rawlings officiating. Interment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Flowers welcome or contributions may be made Highland United Methodist Church, 125 E.
