Alfred Forbes

June 21, 1925 — November 12, 2012

Alfred A. Forbes After a long illness and being cared for by his loving family, and friends, Alfred A. Forbes, affectionately known as "Shorty," left Prince George to go to heaven and be with his Lord Jesus Christ on Monday, November 12, 2012. He was born June 21, 1925, in Warwick, Virginia to the late Carrie B. and Alfred Arthur Forbes Sr. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Virginia McCall and Dale Joynt, and loving brother, Charlie Forbes. He was a loving member of Woodlawn Baptist Church. Shorty's career began years ago after he served in the Navy and went to Norfolk to study automotive repair. He then returned to Hopewell to open his own auto repair garage called Alfred's Garage. From there he ventured into automobile sales in Petersburg where he owned and operated Crater Motor Co. After selling the company he purchased parcels of land and became a real estate developer both residential and commercial. He was a member of the Prince George County Industrial Development Authority for 16 years and on the Board of Directors with Prince George Electric Cooperative. He loved helping people and watching them succeed. Shorty believed that anybody willing to work hard and sacrifice "can be successful." He enjoyed his friends and daily morning visits to the local Hardees. His kindness and generosity will never be forgotten. His love, devotion and strength will be greatly missed. He is survived by his loving wife, Marie G. Forbes; daughter, Linda Forbes and husband, Tom Jarvis; stepson, Charles H. Powers and wife Nellie, stepdaughter, Terri L. Stoots and husband Warren, five loving grandchildren, Edward Lilly, Chase Powers, Ryan Grant, Brittany Grant, Brandon Harlow; one great-grandchild, Morgan Lilly; and several nieces and nephews. Extended family, Donna and Johnny Sheally, Kate Smellie and Sandy Forbes. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 15, 2012 in Woodlawn Baptist Church, 3512 Virginia Street, Hopewell, Virginia 23860 with Pastor Kenneth L. Hendricks officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at the church. The family would like to extend a special "thanks" to James Tadlock, Jimmy Stewart, Tasha Walton and Ben Pringle for their dedicated care. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Woodlawn Baptist Church. Arrangements by the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard.
