Alice Hazel Newsome, 89, of Colonial Heights died Oct. 11, 2009 at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg. Born Feb. 14, 1920, in Laurinburg, N.C., she was one of four children of the late Daniel and Iona Byrd Jackson. She was the wife of George Welton Newsome for more than 58 years. She enjoyed a steadfast involvement as a charter member of Life Church (Assemblies of God) in Colonial Heights. Her professional career was highlighted with a leadership role in Women's Woodmen Circle of the World, North Carolina Chapter. She worked for J.C. Penney Company as a sales manager. Her triumphant arrival through the entrance of Heaven places her in the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ that she proudly proclaimed and exalted throughout her life. She leaves behind a legacy richly steeped in Godly devotion as a tireless prayer warrior, always looking for an opportunity to share her deep Christian faith. Nobody was a stranger to her, evidenced by the countless number of family, friends and acquaintances that she impacted. She is survived by 11 children, Zacky Musselwhite and wife Sandra of Virginia Beach, Clarence Harrison Musselwhite Jr. and wife Brenda of Chester, George Welton Newsome Jr. and wife Shirley of West Nyack, N.Y., Vernon Newsome and wife Ethelyn of New York, Weymon Newsome and wife Marie of New York, Dennis Newsome and wife June of North Carolina, Nancy Grubbs and husband Brad of Rowlett, Texas, Vedie Newsome of Colonial Heights, Dwan Newsome and wife April of Waynesboro, Pa., Donnicia Cogle and husband Tom of La Plata, Md., and Dwight Newsome and wife Frances of Burleson, Texas; 25 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson and one brother, Woodrow Jackson and wife Mertis of Lumberton, N.C. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by a brother, Beverly Jackson, and sister, Beulah Freeman. Visitation will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard in Colonial Heights. The celebration service in her memory will be held at 1 p.m. Oct. 15 at Life Church, 16801 Harrowgate Road in Colonial Heights. Pastor Paul Furrow, of Life Church, the Rev. Dennis Newsome and the Rev. Dwan Newsome will be officiating. Burial will take place at Sunset Memorial Park in Chester.
