Alice Sullivan

July 17, 1941 — September 30, 2012

Alice Marie Sullivan, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother passed away September 30, 2012, in Colonial Heights. Alice was a vibrant and independent woman whose life was defined by her family, her fortitude, and her desire to support other US Army families. Born Alice Marie Ash in Trenton, New Jersey, she married John in 1963. Alice raised her family in many parts of the US and the world, settling in Colonial Heights. She maintained a constant presence in the Officers Wives Club and Army charitable organizations wherever she went. Alice was a true role model of strength and dedication to her own daughters and to many Army spouses. At the time of her passing, she worked tirelessly at the Fort Lee Thrift Shop. She was a long time member of St. Ann Catholic Church and enjoyed her time with her fellow parishioners. Alice is survived by her devoted husband of almost fifty years, John P. Sullivan, Jr., and their daughters, Christine Sullivan-King, Caroline Green, and Claire Kocik. "Mommy Alice" or "Nana" will be missed every day by the granddaughters who adore her; Kylie, Bethany, Alyssa, Kirsten and Mary Claire. Also surviving Alice are her sisters, Patricia, Joan, and Gina, along with a host of extended family members and dear friends. Indeed all who knew Alice will miss her wisdom, her generosity, her style and her laugh. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 4, 2012 in St. Ann Catholic Church, 17111 Jefferson Davis Highway, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834 with Fr. Lou Ruoff, Celebrant. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday prior to mass at the church. A funeral procession will leave from St. Ann Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 5, 2012 for committal service in St. Ann Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made in her name to the American Cancer Society 240 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, Virginia 23060 or the Fisher House Foundation, Inc. 111 Rockville Pike, Suite 420, Rockville, Maryland 20850-5168. "…that you may not grieve as others do, who have no hope." 1 Thessalonians 4:13. Arrangements by the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard.
