Alvin Cornelius Mottley, 97 years old, died peacefully in his sleep January 22, 2010 at home. He was born May 17, 1912 in Rice, Virginia, one of 12 children. Alvin served in the US Navy during World War II in the Pacific theater. After the war, he worked as a pipe fitter/plumber on different projects that took him and his family all over the United States. Alvin was preceded in death by his wife of over 60 years, Myrtle Inez Mottley (Oakes). Survivors include two sons, Larmin D. Mottley (Sue) of Navarre, Florida, and Thom Mottley of Prince George, Virginia; three grandchildren, Chris Mottley of Baltimore, Maryland, Naomi Mottley and Kathy Mottley of Richmond, Virginia; and one sister, Myrtle Casen of Staunton, Virginia. The family would like to express their appreciation to Heaven Sent, and Crater Community Hospice who cared for Alvin in his final days. A special thanks goes to Sandy. Sandy was a wonderful friend and caregiver to Alvin. The family cannot thank her enough for her love for and care of Alvin over the years. A memorial service, with visitation following, will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday, January 29, 2010 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard.
