Andrea Lynn Barrett, lovingly known as "Ange" or "YaYa", 61, passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, surrounded by her family. Born in New Jersey on June 22, 1963, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Leonard and Margo Schoch VanderGroef. She was also preceded in death by her beloved four-legged friend, Milo.
Born and raised in Northern New Jersey, Andrea married her high school sweetheart, embarking on a life of adventure as a military wife. Together, they traveled and built a life across the globe—from California to Panama, Virginia Beach, and eventually settling in Chester, Virginia.
She proudly served her community as a 911 dispatcher in Virginia Beach and Richmond, dedicating nearly a decade to helping others in their most difficult moments.
Ange was a gifted crafter and crocheted blankets for every member of her family—a tradition that kept her love wrapped around them forever. She had a knack for transforming ordinary sea glass into beautiful works of art, capturing the magic of coastal memories.
With a strong Diet Coke addiction and an unapologetic love for sweets, Ange found peace in cooking and baking, often spoiling her family with delicious meals and treats. Grocery shopping wasn’t just a chore for her; it was something she genuinely enjoyed doing. But above all else, Ange lived for her two daughters and four grandchildren, who were the center of her world. Being their biggest fan and greatest supporter brought her endless happiness.
She is survived by her two loving daughters, Vanessa Murray and husband, Brian, Linsey Peck and husband, Chris; four adored grandchildren, Savannah and Liam Murray, Blakely and Easton Peck; beloved sister, Donna Ellman and husband, Jim; two nieces, Sara Ellman and Laura Ellman; nephew, Andrew Ellman and wife, Katie; ex-husband and best friend, Mike Barrett; sister-in-law, Sharon Martins and husband, Joao and their family; brothers-in-law, Jim Barrett and his wife, Kim, Dave Barrett and their families; mother-in-law, Sandra Forbes and husband, John; cherished friend, Kelly Whittle; and other extended family members. The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to Hannah Cox and Ashley Catlin for their unwavering love and support during Ange’s time of need.
Interment will be private. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. Online condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.
