Anne Bonner Covington, 87, of Colonial Heights passed away on Friday, April 29, 2016 at the Dunlop House, where she had resided since 2012. Born on August 23, 1928 in Louisville, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Reverend Andy L. Bonner and Inez D. Bonner, and was also preceded in death by her husband, Stan H. Covington Jr.; and brothers, William P. and Robert L. Bonner. She attended Petersburg High School during World War II and graduated from Tift College, Forsyth, Georgia in 1950. Mrs. Covington was married to Stan H. Covington, Jr. for 43 years. Anne taught English and Latin at Colonial Heights Junior High for 27 years. She was active in the Virginia Junior Classical League (VJCL), serving as co-chair for nine years. She was also instrumental on the national level of National Junior Classical League (NJCL) as the founder of the NJCL Latin Honor Society in 1989. Her dedication and service was honored in 1992 by establishing a scholarship in her name, The Anne B. Covington NJCL Latin Honor Society Scholarship. She was an active member of West End Baptist Church for over 70 years, singing in the adult choir, teaching and playing piano for many Sunday School classes, serving as Church Clerk and Chairman of the History Committee. After retiring from teaching, she became a member of the Burlington Garden Club and began singing in the Southernaires. She is survived by her children, David Covington (Diane) of Raleigh, North Carolina, Lynne Raymond (Mark) of Williston, North Dakota, Larry Covington (Gina) of Amelia, Virginia; grandchildren, Meredith Clayton (Ryan) and Jonathan Covington of Raleigh, North Carolina, Jessica Covington of Youngstown, Ohio, Jenna and Will Raymond of Fort Collins, Colorado; great grandchild, Maggie Leigh Clayton of Raleigh, North Carolina; sister, Sue B. Shields; brother-in-law, Hal Shields of Fairburn, Georgia; sisters-in-law, Shirley B. Marshall of Richmond, Virginia, and Mildred C. Baeder of Longmeadow, Massachusetts. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at West End Baptist Church, 6506 Boydton Plank Road, Petersburg, Virginia 23803, with the Reverend Dr. Mark Hughes officiating. A reception will follow the service in the church fellowship hall. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard.
