Arlick L. Brockwell Jr., 80, of Petersburg, Virginia passed away suddenly December 18, 2017, at his home in Dinwiddie, Virginia. Arlick was a graduate of Duke University and the University of Virginia. He had many roles he enjoyed and for which he was cherished during his lifetime: loving husband; adoring father and grandfather; devoted church member and Sunday School teacher at Highland Methodist. He was a leader in the community and trusted friend to many. However, the way he may have been the most widely known was simply as "Coach Brockwell," as he was affectionately called by so many for nearly 50 years. Through his roles teaching and coaching football at John Marshall and Prince George High Schools, coaching at The University of Virginia and with the New Orleans' Saints training team in the 1960's, and through his long career as Head of Intramural Sports and Director of Student Activities at the Medical College of Virginia, he motivated and inspired countless students and team members through his warm, loving personality and deep concern for their wellbeing and futures. It was a role he never lost pride in and that defined him as the man who will be missed by all who knew him. His greatest joys in his later years were his view of the river from his porch and boat in Urbanna and from his own deck in the woods of Dinwiddie. Arlick was preceded in death by his father, Arlick L. Brockwell, Sr., and his mother, Lucille Brockwell Derby, both of Petersburg. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Garner Brockwell; sister, Bonnie Brown (Russ); brother, Gerald Brockwell; his son, Scott Brockwell (Michele); his daughters Sherri Dymon (Bill) and Terri Porter (Sam); step daughters Cassie Walls (Walter) and Brooke Dicks (Scott); grandchildren Heather, Hollie and Travis Brockwell; Jessica, Andrew and Evan Dymon; Anne Waggoner and Samuel Porter; Savannah and Jeb Walls; and Church Trombley; nephews Wesley Brown and Ashley Brockwell, and niece Madison Brown. Visitation will be held at E. Alvin Small funeral home in Colonial Heights on Friday, December 22, 2017 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 23, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Highland United Methodist Church, 125 E.
