Barbara Grizzard Barham, 83, of Colonial Heights, passed away suddenly on Thursday, April 19, 2018, in her home in Colonial Heights. She was born in Roanoke, Va. on April 4, 1935. Barbara had an insatiable quest for knowledge, receiving multiple degrees in various subjects. She taught elementary school in Colonial Heights for many years and had a lasting positive impact on many young children. Later, she dabbled in music with a passion for piano and voice. She also tried her hand at impressionistic art and her works were featured in many art shows. But her true passion were her Cocker Spaniels. She bred and showed her championship Spaniels for many years and over time, also judged at various dog shows along the east coast. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Alton and Mable Grizzard; and is survived by her brother, William "Bill"; sister, Sylvia; devoted husband, Charlie; her eldest son, Charles Jr. and his wife, Valerie and step-grandson, Hamilton; and her youngest son, Chris and his wife, Pam and granddaughter, Samantha. A memorial service will be held 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2018, at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes, 2033 Blvd., where a visitation will be held until 8 p.m. following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Colonial Heights Animal Shelter.
