Barbara Bates Perkins, 88, of Bradenton, Florida died on July 1, 2015. Barbara was born on May 9, 1927 to Robert and Pearl Bates in Burlington, Vermont. They moved to Lebanon, New Hampshire in 1934 and she graduated from Lebanon High School in 1945. She graduated from Lasell Jr. College in 1947. Barbara married Sherman Perkins in Lebanon, New Hampshire in 1947. They had two sons, Alan and Scott. The family moved to Alexandria, Virginia in 1953. Barbara worked as a bookkeeper and later worked part time as a nursery school teacher for 10 years. In 1973 she went to work for the Federal Government in Alexandria, Virginia. She started in a clerical position and soon advanced in this new career and became a security analyst. She retired in 1990. She was always active in her church and she loved the outdoors and walked daily. Reading was a lifelong pursuit. She loved people and had many friends wherever she lived. Barbara was pre-deceased by her parents, Robert and Pearl Bates of Newport, NH, her husband, Sherman H. Perkins of Alexandria, VA, her oldest son, Alan Perkins of Knoxville, TN and nephew, William Bates of Lebanon, NH. She is survived by brother, Robert N. Bates of Sunapee, NH and by son and daughter in law, Scott and Cyndi Perkins of Palmetto, FL. Daughter in law Susan Perkins of Knoxville, TN. Grandchildren Christy Johnson of Nashville, TN, Brent Perkins of Chattanooga, TN, Ryan Perkins of Prince George, VA and Erin Perkins of Richmond, VA. Great grandchildren Hunter and Callie Johnson of Nashville, TN. Nephews Richard Bates of Lebanon, NH, James Bates of Sunapee, NH, Timothy Bates of Newport, NH, Robert A. Bates of Newport, NH and niece, Ann Stillson of Hartford, VT. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, August 8 at 11:00 a.m. at The Heights Baptist Church 17201 Jefferson Davis Hwy Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834.
