Bertha Maitland "Bert" McCann, 85, of Petersburg, passed away on Thursday, April 17, 2014 after a long courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Brunswick County, Virginia to the late Harvey and Grace Bishop Maitland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Frank McCann and a daughter, Cheryl Belinda McCann. Roy and Bert were founding members of the Namozine Fire Department. Bert was a retired Retail and Credit Specialist who continued to work after retirement from Southern Department Stores. She was Manager of Rucker Rosenstock at Walnut Mall until the store went out of business. She was Office Manager for Drs. Warren and Holden, Business Manager for The House of Burgesses, she went on to work for Love's Wayside Furniture, and then to work weekends for E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes Inc. in Petersburg until her health failed. Bert is survived by one daughter, Gail McCann of Petersburg; and one son, Troy Dale McCann and wife, Mary; two grandsons, Matthew and Jack McCann all of Villa Hills, Kentucky; one brother, George Maitland and wife, Anita of Macon Georgia; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; one special person whom she shared a seventy year friendship, Clarence "Pete" Cairnes. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 26, 2014 at the Petersburg Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 3935 S. Crater Road with Chaplain John Conwell officiating, interment will be private. The family will receive friends the day of the service, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
