Betty Vinson

Elizabeth "Betty" Agerton Vinson, 72, of Prince George, passed away on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at Johnston Willis Medical Center. Born in Bay Minette, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late Marvlin F. and Marie Gee Agerton, and was preceded in death by a brother, Farrell Wayne Agerton. She attended Cameron Avenue Church of Christ in Colonial Heights. At 40 years old, she graduated as a Registered Nurse from MCV School of Nursing, and worked in the Neuroscience ICU, she later worked at Poplar Springs and currently John Randolph Medical Center in Hopewell. Between working for Poplar Springs and John Randolph, she spent several years running the batting cages at Go Kart Village, and was instrumental in founding Batter's Choice Sporting Goods. At 50 years old she received her pilots License to include an instrument rating. She was an active member of the Wing Nuts Flying Club at Chesterfield County Airport and the "Ninety-Nines" women's Pilots association. Betty was founder and organizer of the Annual Christmas Toy Airlift, a project of the Virginia Chapter 99s, that invites volunteer pilots from across the Commonwealth to fly into Chesterfield County Airport to deliver gifts for military families and for hospitalized veterans. She is survived by her husband, Laymon H. Vinson; two sons, Darryn M. Vinson and wife, L. Gervaise of Prince George and Kevin S. Vinson and fiancée, Cyndee Schmeits of Prince George; step-mother, Mary Frances Agerton of Montgomery, Alabama; a step-brother, Jimmy Bohn; a step-sister, Linda Jo Bohn; three grandchildren, Lauren G. and Emily G. Vinson and Avery S. Vinson; a brother, Benny Agerton and wife, Linda P. of Millbrook, Alabama; numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday September 7, 2013 in the Petersburg Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 3935 S. Crater Road with the Reverend David Prather officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends following the service on Saturday at the funeral home.
