Betty Childress Winfree, 77, of Colonial Heights, passed away on Wednesday, October 21, 2020. Born on May 31, 1943, she was the daughter of the late John T. Childress and Louise Thompson Lancaster.
Betty was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Colonial Heights. She retired with 30 years of service as an Engineering Specialist for the Virginia Department of Transportation. She was a volunteer for the Remedial Reading Program at North Elementary School in the Colonial Heights Public School system.
She is survived by her long-time companion, Melvin H. Hall; her sons, James T. Winfree (Amy) and Kevin W. Winfree (Elaine); grandchildren, Samantha Scott (Ryan), Jacob, Grace & Lauren Winfree; great-grandson, Liam Scott.
A special thanks to our wonderful caregivers Millie and Gertrude and to Crater Community Hospice who provided the greatest care to Betty and made this difficult time bearable.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 26, 2020 in Woodland Cemetery, Fairground Drive, Chase City, Virginia 23924. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, October 25, 2020 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834.
