Beverly Stephens

Beverly Jean (Roberts) Stephens met her Lord on February 13, 2018, after a prolonged battle with Stage IV renal disease. Beverly is survived by George W. Stephens, her loving husband of almost �fty-eight years; her son, George W. Stephens, Jr. and his wife, Gayle J. Stephens; her daughter, Sondra J. Stephens; and a grandson, George W. Stephens, III; by two younger brothers, Duane and Richard and their wives, Mary Ann and Ann, respectively. Beverly is also survived by a sister-in-law, Darlene Roberts; by two brothers-in-law, Jerry Johnson and Louis Madison; by two aunts and by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Beverly was pre-deceased by her father, William K. Roberts; her mother, Bernice L. (Henderson) Roberts; an older brother, Wayne K. Roberts; an older sister, Barbara A. (Roberts) Madison; and by a younger sister, Rebecca L. (Roberts) Johnson. Beverly was born in Bradenton, Florida on August 15, 1940 and graduated from high school in Prince George County, Virginia. She met George (Bill to her) at Fort Lee, Virginia when she was working in the Post Exchange in May 1960, and when he was attending the Quartermaster Of�cer's Basic School. They became engaged within two weeks, and married in Germany, where George was then stationed, on August 12, 1960 - �rst by the German mayor and later that day by an Army Chaplain. Beverly was an exceptionally supportive wife, moving with George from Germany to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, to Fort Lee, Virginia several times, to Okinawa, Japan and to Germany again in 1977 before George retired in 1980. Beverly endured two very strenuous years - one in Missouri and another in Dinwiddie, Virginia when George was deployed to Viet Nam in 1965 and again in 1968. After George retired from the Army and became a law enforcement of�cer, Beverly was once again the �rst to love and support him in his new endeavor. Despite his assignments, she was always there to encourage. With her wonderful alto voice, Beverly sang in various church choirs in the Orlando, Florida and Petersburg, Virginia areas, was a dedicated member of the Dinwiddie County Namozine Volunteer Fire Department's Women's Auxiliary, was Program Chairman and then President of a 200 member Officers' Wives Club in Germany, taught English to Japanese students in Okinawa so that her Pastor could witness there, taught Vacation Bible School and children's Sunday School at several churches in the area, taught what was then called the Singles and Single Again Sunday School Class at Colonial Heights Baptist, was one of the "founders" of Apples of Gold, made and donated doll cakes for many years, and taught the history of tea and the proper serving of it throughout the Tri-Cities area. Beverly was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Once her children entered college, Beverly worked at a furniture store in Petersburg, Virginia; for a security �rm in the same area; and, for about ten years, was the Human Resources Of�cer and Of�ce Manager for a branch of Pennzoil then located in Colonial Heights, Virginia. She was commended on several occasions for her extraordinary performance at Pennzoil. More than anything else, Beverly was a very devoted Christian woman, wife and mother. She loved Jesus and her family with all of her heart. She delighted in serving and helping others and had an infectious sense of humor mixed with a slightly mischievous spirit. On behalf of Beverly, special appreciation is given to Mrs. Dianna Olsen and Mrs. Angie Barker who assisted George and Sondra with Beverly's caretaking for the last three years. A combined visitation and celebration of life service will be held at Colonial Heights Baptist Church (The Heights or CHBC), 17201 Jefferson Davis Highway, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834, on Saturday, February 24, 2018. Visitation will begin at 9:30, and the celebration of life service will begin at ll:00 am. Graveside services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on a date to be announced. ln lieu of �owers, please consider contributing to the CHBC's mission fund, especially Lottie Moon or to the American Diabetes Association.
