Billy Joe Barnes, 74, of Squirrel Level Road, Petersburg, departed this life into the Kingdom of God on Thursday, August 28, 2008 at Southside Regional Medical Center. He was the son of the late Clifford and Bessie Mosley Barnes, and was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Lucille "Lucy" Strum Barnes, and his beloved grandson, Sean Christopher Maitland. Mr. Barnes retired from Brown and Williamson Tobacco Co. after 32 years of service. He is survived by a daughter, Barbara Faulkner (Pookie) and husband, David of Dinwiddie, and a son, Richard Neal Barnes (Possum) of Chester; a grandson, Jason Barnes of Chester; brother, Tommy Barnes and wife, Marie of Dinwiddie; sister-in-law, Mentha Bell Lewis and husband Charles E. of Dinwiddie; numerous nieces and nephews. Billy was a very fun loving, thoughtful, caring, and giving person who loved everyone. He sincerely enjoyed being with family and friends for social activities. He is loved very much, and will be greatly missed by everyone that knew him. His many fond memories will be cherished forever by his family, friends and pet bird "Doodle." A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at the Petersburg Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 3935 S. Crater Road. Interment Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at the funeral home.
