Bobby Byrd Tyler, Sr., 87, passed away on Monday, May 9, 2016 at Tyler's Retreat. Born on March 20, 1929 in Marianna, Florida, he was the son of the late Hubert and Bessie Tyler, and was also predeceased by his spouse, Alice Jane Harris; and siblings, Paul Tyler, James Tyler and, Sarah Tyler. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Petersburg and was a member of the Colonial Heights American Legion Post #284. After he graduated high school, he served in the United States Army, playing football and baseball. He received a football scholarship to play quarterback for the University of Richmond, later receiving a Master in Education Administration at Virginia State University. Mr. Tyler taught math at Hermitage, Benedictine, Petersburg and Colonial Heights High Schools. At Hermitage, he was also the head baseball coach, assistant football coach and was the first one to start and coach the golf team. He was also the football coach at Benedictine, where he was the first coach in school history to coach an undefeated team. While at Petersburg, he was the head football coach. In Colonial Heights, he also taught drivers Ed, was the athletic director for 5 years and was the head football coach for 20 years. He is survived by his wife, Janice Tyler; children, Bobby Byrd Tyler, Jr. and Rebecca Jane Batton and husband, Harold; 4 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at First Baptist Church 235 West Washington Street Petersburg, Virginia 23804 with the Reverend Robert Dawson and the Reverend Robert Livesay officiating. Interment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park, South Prince George, Virginia. The family will receive friends an hour prior to service from 10-11:00 a.m. at the church.
