With the grace of a butterfly, Brenda Louise Ange, 83, of Colonial Heights, spread her wings and took flight into eternity on Sunday, March 23, 2025. Born November 26, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Rufus Baxter and Louise Williams Griffith, and was also preceded in death by her husband, Freddy Ange.
Brenda spent over 20 years serving as an administrative assistant for the Department of Corrections, always diligent, always steady, yet never losing the lightness of heart that made her who she was. But her true passion was found in the delicate, fluttering wings of the creatures she so adored; an amateur lepidopterist, she collected butterflies from all over the world, captivated by their colors, their freedom, and their ability to bring joy to those who took the time to notice them.
Much like a butterfly, Brenda never stayed in one place for too long. She moved gracefully between churches and communities, always bringing light and love wherever she landed. Whether through a warm embrace, a thoughtful word, or one of her handmade crocheted gifts, she wrapped people in comfort just as she did with the afghans, scarves, and blankets she so lovingly created. Her hands were never idle, always weaving warmth into every stitch, and her generosity extended far beyond her own community. Through her work with the From the Heart organization and as a member of the Colonial Heights Senior Citizens Club, Brenda ensured that her creations reached those in need, both locally and across the seas.
Her journey here may be complete, but her spirit will forever flutter in the hearts of those she loved. When you see a butterfly dancing in the breeze, may you think of Brenda—light, free, and beautifully unforgettable.
She is survived by her four children, Debbie Smith, David Chappell and wife, Colleen, Bonnie Mitchell and husband, Larry, Jackie Cookson; grandchildren, Amber Crafton, Heather Larrabee and husband, Brandon, David Chappell, Jr. and wife, Alex, Tony Chappell and wife, Missy, Elizabeth Bise and husband, Steven, Keith Stagg and wife, Carey Jane, Kevin Stagg, Jakob Cookson, Justin Cookson, Zoe Duffíe and husband, Jacob; numerous beloved great-grandchildren; brother, Baxter Griffith and wife, Joyce; and other extended family members.
Interment will be private. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. Online condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com
