Calvin Turner

October 8, 1934 — April 6, 2018

Calvin Andrew Turner, 83, a lifelong resident of Matoaca, died Friday, April 6, 2018 at his residence. He was the son of the late Andrew G. and Mary Rudd Turner and the widower of Mildred "Millie" Chappell Turner. He was an active member of Matoaca United Methodist Church, where he served as secretary and participated in many other activities of church life. He was a former member of the Matoaca Kiwanis, a retired employee of Virginia Department of Transportation with 43 years of service and a veteran of the U.S. Army. Calvin was loved by many and devoted to his friends and family. He loved to laugh and eat and be with the people he loved. Calvin and Millie were special and are no doubt reunited and smiling down upon us all, especially their beloved son Andy. Calvin was a dedicated and proud father. He is survived by his son, William "Andy" Turner and cousins Lloyd E. "Butch" Turner and his wife Janice Turner and their children, Jason Turner and Kimberly Turner Voxland (Scott) and granddaughter Logan Olivia Voxland. Butch and Janice considered him a brother and he was like a grandfather to Kimberly and Jason. He was always proud to call himself part of the family and much more than just a cousin. He is also survived by his cousin Robert Turner and family. Calvin and Robert grew up together like brothers, spent much time together and upon retirement ran a lawn mower business together for many years. Also survived by nephews Wayne Chappell and Dennis Chappell (Cheryl); great nephew Philip Chappell (Golf) and their son River; great nephew Johnathan Chappell; great niece Bethany Kennedy (Bryan) and her son Hudson; and sister-in-law Frances Redd. Also survived by dear friend Bobby Thompson (Cindy). The two shared a very special bond. Calvin is fondly remembered by many family members, cousins, friends, and former coworkers. Almost everyone has a funny story to tell or a tale of Calvin's unending generosity. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 P.M. on Tuesday, April 10 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 11 at 2:00 PM at Matoaca United Methodist Church, 6301 River Road, with the Reverend Richard Gordon officiating. Interment will follow in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to CDLS Foundation, 302 West Main Street #100, Avon, Connecticut 06001 or Ronald McDonald House, 2330 Monument Avenue, Richmond, VA 23220.
