Carl Blandford Cottrell, 79, of Colonial Heights, passed away Wednesday July, 3, 2013. He was born November 18, 1933 to the late James Henry and Blanche Elder Cottrell and was preceded in death by a sister Charlotte Mae Cottrell Lucas and a brother Gordon Cottrell. Mr. Cottrell was a member of Swift Creek Baptist Church in Colonial Heights, the Fraternal Order of the Eagles #882, former member and President of the Colonial Heights Jaycees and an avid runner and longtime member and volunteer of the Tri City Road Runners Club. He retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation after many years of service. Mr. Cottrell is survived by his sister, Mildred C. Lewis and husband Ralph of Alexandria; nephews, Frank O. Simmons, Jr. and Todd Lewis; niece, Susan S. Dahlie; five great-nieces and nephews, and numerous friends and acquaintances. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 24, 2013 in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg, Virginia, with the Reverend Dr. Steve Felker officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday July 23, 2013 from 7:00- 8:30 p.m. at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory 2033 Boulevard.
