Carrie “Kay” Elizabeth Gross Ogburn, 75, of Chester, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Monday, February 19, 2024. Born in Maryland on April 5, 1948, she was the daughter of the late John M. Lewis and Agnes L. Lewis. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Deborah and Nancy Lewis.
Kay was well known in the community for her career as a hairstylist for over 50 years. Her salon, Falling Creek Hairstylists, was a haven - a place where clients became lifelong friends, and each appointment was a reunion. Kay was always a hardworking woman, even outside of the salon. She loved to garden and tend to her flowers, enjoyed canning, and traveling to see new places with her beloved husband by her side. She was a longtime member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Colonial Heights, and a member of the Moose Lodge in Manchester. Kay was also well known for her uncanny knack and pure luck for finding money in the most unexpected places, every discovery being a delightful surprise. Her infectious optimism was also displayed during her favorite past time: sitting in front of the slot machines and playing the lottery. Kay’s legacy is etched in the countless lives she touched, the smiles she sparked, and the community she built with her compassionate spirit and skilled hands.
She is survived by her husband of 11 years, William Henry “W.H.” or “Bill” Ogburn; her daughter, Wendy Gross Witt (Kenny); son, Danny Gross, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Stephanie Gross; grandchildren, Tonya Russomanno (Tony), James Hendrick, III (Kara), Kyle Gross, and Wyatt Gross; great-grandchildren, Mason and Landry; brother, Richard “Dickie” Lewis; sister, Linda Cooper; half-brother, Brock Lewis; half-sister, Courtney Lewis; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Porter and Rebecca Ogburn; and numerous special nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard Colonial Heights, VA 23834. Interment will follow in Dale Memorial Park, Chesterfield, VA. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, February 26, 2024, at the funeral home.
