Carroll Ray Hawkes, 82, passed away on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at his residence. Born in Nottoway County, Virginia on February 10, 1934, he was the son of the late Malcolm Emerson and Mary Hilda Lewis Hawkes; and was also preceded in death by his two sons, Mark Emerson and Robert Lynn Hawkes. Carroll graduated from Blackstone High School in 1951. Mr. Hawkes was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church in Colonial Heights. His work career included E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, electrician at E.I. DuPont and the Petersburg Waste Water Treatment Plant/South Central Waste Water Authority where he worked for 23 years. Carroll was an active life member of the Southside Virginia Emergency Crew in Petersburg, Virginia as a volunteer for 55 years. He was active in the Virginia Associating of Volunteer Rescue Squads where he held many offices, including president. Carroll is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Elsie Hooper Hawkes; one daughter, Barbara Hawkes Miller (Kevin); three grandchildren, Victoria Miller Saxon (David), William Sawyers Miller (Shelby) and Thomas Hawkes Miller (Sierra); one great-grandson, Grayson Harold Miller; one brother, David Emerson Hawkes; a sister, Lois Hawkes White (Don) and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2016 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, VA 23834 with the Reverend Robert Livesay, officiating. Interment will follow at 12:00 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 1705 Cox Rd, Wilsons, VA 23894. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 29, 2016 at the funeral home.
