Catherine Dubus

July 15, 1932 — November 20, 2017

Catherine Teresa Dubus passed away on November 20 surrounded by her loving family. Catherine was born July 15, 1932 in Morristown, New Jersey. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Michael Thomas Dubus, her parents, William and Helen Callahan, her infant son Thomas and her daughter, Mary Schindel. She is survived by her daughter Kathleen (Bob) Cravens of Ellsworth, Maine; son Michael (Marietta) Dubus of Atlanta, Georgia; son Tim (Mary) Dubus of Denver, Colorado; daughter Maureen (Kevin) Stengel of Richmond; and son-in-law Paul Schindel of Chester. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, each of whom brought her immense joy: Catie, Zach and Molly Cravens; Patrick, Kelsey and Matthew Dubus; Michael, Bridget and Maggie Dubus; Connor, Rory, Neil and Bridget Schindel; and Aidan and Fintan Stengel. Catherine and Mike moved to Chester, Virginia in 1965 and were devoted parishioners of St. Ann's Catholic Church for over 50 years. Catherine was a founding member of St. Ann's Catholic Daughters in 1971, and also volunteered countless hours to many other parish meetings and groups. After her children became young adults, she worked as an assistant at the Chesterfield County Library for over 15 years. A friend to all she met, Catherine was well loved for her optimism, cheerfulness and ability to find the silver lining in every situation. She brought out the best in everyone, offering kind words and encouragement to friends, family and even strangers. She loved cups of tea, lunch with the ladies, visiting her children and grandchildren, and holiday get-togethers. She and Mike made many trips to visit relatives in Ireland and all across the country. Catherine will be missed for her beautiful smile, sparkling eyes and her ability to make even the simplest gathering seem special. She was a great listener and was always more interested in the stories of others than talking about herself. Her easy laugh brought out the best in everyone around her. She was a devoted wife and mother who valued her faith and family above all else. Catherine led by example, with her selflessness always putting others first. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 2, at St. Ann's Catholic Church, 17111 Jefferson Davis Highway. Visitation will be held at St. Ann's prior to the funeral from 10 to 11 a.m. There will be a reception (and further visitation) following the funeral in St. Ann's Parish Hall. A funeral procession will leave the church at Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. for Interment in St. Ann Catholic Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Beth C.
