Charles Ray Massey, 89, departed this life on May 8, 2023. Born on May 18, 1933, in the small farming community of Covington, IN, he was the youngest of six children born to the late Leland and Mary Massey. He was also predeceased in death by two brothers, Carter and Dale; two sisters, Marilee and his twin Charline; a son, Patrick Massey; and a grandson, Kyle Daughety. He is survived by his sister Donna Nicklas; two daughters, Michele Clarke and Karen Massey (Mohan); grandsons, Benjamin Daughety and Jack Forjan; granddaughter, Valerie Forjan; nieces and nephews; his children’s mother, Simka Massey; and his longtime love and companion, Nancy Lufkin.
Charles enlisted in the United States Air Force at a young age in December 1951 and retired as a Master Sergeant in July 1972. He received his GED shortly after his enlistment. He earned his master’s degree in 1979. He was a firm believer in education and thanks the United States government for the GI Bill. He then worked for the Department of Social Services in Prince George County, retiring from that position to become a realtor.
He settled in Colonial Heights, VA and lived many happy years. He loved sports, especially golf. He often said he was only a slightly better golfer after 40 years of playing. He had a wonderful personality and will be deeply missed by those who love him.
Interment will be private. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. Condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.
