Charles Curtis "Curt" Sheffield, 72, of Hopewell, died Tuesday, December 25, 2012. He was the son of the late Louis Carleton and Hazel Johnson Sheffield. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley M. Sheffield; two step-daughters, Patricia L. Wilson, and Roselyn D. Wilson-Lewis; two brothers, Louis O. Sheffield, and Robert E. Sheffield. Mr. Sheffield is survived by his step-daughter, Linda Jewel Gilliam; two grandsons, Logan G. Gilliam, and Charles R. Wilson-Adams; four sisters, Iris Coleman, of Colonial Heights, Carol "Susie" Sober of Colonial Heights, Betty S. Smith of Marietta Georgia; and Russell "Sugar" Smelley of Chesterfield; and many nieces, and nephews. He graduated from Fork Union Military Academy in 1960; obtained a Bachelor or Arts degree in Economics from the College of William and Mary; and a Juris Doctorate from Marsh-Wythe School of Law at William and Mary. He retired from Dominion Resources Inc. where he specialized in construction contracts. He was past Governor of Jamestown (Williamsburg) Moose Lodge 757; later a member of Hopewell Moose Lodge Family Center 1755, and past President of the Legion of the Moose 148. Mr. Sheffield was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the Antarctic as part of the Navy's Operation Deep Freeze, and aboard a destroyer, as part of the U.S. Blockade during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 637, and American Legion Post 146 in Hopewell. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 882 in Petersburg, and Aerie 4506 in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 5, 2013 in the Hopewell Moose Lodge 4701 Western Street Hopewell, Virginia 23860, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, family request donations to American Lung Association, 9221 Forest Hill Avenue, Richmond, Virginia 23235 and to the American Cancer Society Glen Allen Office, 4240 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, Virginia 23060. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory 2033 Boulevard.
