Charles Allen Vaughan, affectionately known as Chuck, 69, of Chesterfield passed away on Wednesday, May 1, 2024. Born August 4, 1954, he was the son of the late Allen Browder and Mary Charles Vaughan, and was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Deborah Vaughan.
Chuck was a beloved figure who lived life with flair and enthusiasm, inspiring everyone around him to do the same. His passion for music began at age 11, with a special affinity for percussion. Throughout his life, Chuck curated a remarkable collection of over 150 instruments, performing and recording music with bands such as Sandcastle, Touch, Kid Shaleen, and the News in the 1970s and 80s. His love for jazz and percussion ran deep, bringing rhythm and joy to every performance.
Chuck's culinary journey led him to open Hilltop Barbecue in Colonial Heights during the 1990s. As owner, his keen sense of humor and engaging personality made Hilltop a welcoming community space. Chuck’s infectious laughter often resonated throughout the restaurant, where he could be found sharing stories and meals with patrons.
In recent years, Chuck's expertise in fine wines made him a sought-after specialist at Monsieur Touton Selection, Ltd. He shared his vast knowledge of French wines, particularly his favorites, Bordeaux and Champagnes, with restaurants across Richmond and Williamsburg. His joy in cultivating relationships with restaurant owners and savoring exquisite cuisine was evident in every interaction.
For 40 years, Chuck cherished his marriage to Debbie, the true love of his life. Together, they embraced life with warmth and hospitality. His love for animals, including his cherished cat, Mardi Gras, mirrored his philosophy of celebrating life’s vibrancy and beauty.
Chuck leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and music. His family and friends take comfort in the belief that he and Debbie are dancing together again beneath the harvest moon, united in eternal joy.
He is survived by his beloved cat, Mardi Gras; devoted friends, Marvin and Georgia Faison, Rebecca Moss, Mickey Jett, Rob Boclair, who all provided unwavering support throughout his illness and transition; as well as a host of cousins.
