Charlotte Mae Cabaniss Pond Hawkins, daughter of the late Lula Holloway Cabaniss and John Thomas Cabaniss, entered Heaven's gates on June 22, 2016. Born in Petersburg, VA on August 8, 1930, she was the first in her family to earn a high school diploma when she graduated from Petersburg High School on June 11, 1948. Charlotte was a long-time resident of Colonial Heights and faithful member of Colonial Heights Baptist Church, where she proudly performed in her first piano recital at the young age of 78. She was a devoted mother, wife, and homemaker, who loved to bake chocolate pies, crochet baby blankets, and show off photos of her family-especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was deeply patriotic and profoundly proud of her husbands', daughters', sons-in law's, and grandchildrens' service in the military. Charlotte was the widow of Albert Randolph Pond and was also preceded in death by her parents and 5 sisters: Dahlia, Hazel, Margaret, Teenie, and Teenie Baby. She is survived by her devoted and loving husband of 21 years, Edgar "Ben" Hawkins. She will also be greatly missed by her 3 daughters and their husbands (Denise & Douglas Berry, Robin & Christopher Burne, Karen & Chuck Tomlinson), stepson (Tom Hawkins), grandchildren (Jennifer Kilpatrick & Jessica Kilpatrick Melin, Christian & Connor Burne, and Casey & Kendall Tomlinson), great grandchildren (Raelynn, Maylee, Charlotte, & Benjamin Melin), and many extended family and friends, including her "Golden Girl", Kelly Hearle. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 25, 2016 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory 2033 Boulevard with the Reverend Mike Osborne officiating. Interment will follow in Blandford Cemetery Petersburg, Virginia. The family will receive friends Friday, June 24, 2016 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Alzheimer's Association (Alzheimer's Association, Greater Richmond Chapter, 4600 Cox Road, Suite 130, Glen Allen, VA 23060; 804-967-2580).
