Charlotte Doris Walker of Colonial Heights, Virginia, affectionately known as "Dottie" by her family and friends, went to be with her Lord and Heavenly Family on July 23, 2010. The widow of Marlowe K. Walker, she had been a resident of the city for over fifty years. Doris was born March 29, 1914 in Franklin County, Virginia and moved to Roanoke, Virginia as a young child. She was the daughter of Robert Lee Custer and Ella Mason Custer. She was predeceased by three sisters, and two brothers. Doris was retired from Safeway Stores after 31 years of dedicated service. She enjoyed her retirement years with her husband, Marlowe, at their Lake Gaston home. She was a homemaker who loved to cook and enjoyed vacation trips to Nags Head with her family. Doris attended Calvary Baptist Church, Colonial Heights, Virginia and loved her church family. She was known for her kindness and generosity to others. She loved to laugh, and even in her later years when her eyesight and hearing failed, if she saw someone laugh, she would laugh with them. She was a loving Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, and favorite aunt to her nieces and nephews in Roanoke. Doris is survived by her daughter, JoAnn Jones and husband, Kenneth of Colonial Heights; her son, Robert C. Walker and wife, Naysa of Chapins, South Carolina; two grandsons, Keith L. Our family was blessed to have her with us for 96 years. Special thanks to Crater Hospice and her dedicated caregivers, Pam Carden, Ethel Barrow, and Tonya Dunbar for their loving care given to her in the home the last five months.
