Chesteen Lee Smith, 86, of Colonial Heights, went home to be with his Savior on February 16, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents, William McKinley Smith and Irene Sarah Day of Caneyville, Kentucky; his sisters, Christine Willowby and Francis Hall; and his brother, Junior Smith. A graduate of Western Kentucky University, Chesteen served in the Air Force for 20 years (1954-1974), retiring a Lieutenant Colonel. He worked for the Chesterfield County Subdivision Planning Department from 1974 to 1990, before his retirement. Chesteen took great pride in his work, paying as much attention to the small things as to the big tasks, earning him the respect and admiration of all who knew him. In addition, he, along with his wife, Jo, were foster parents for 25 years with Colonial Heights and Chesterfield County, welcoming more than 40 foster children into their home and treating them as part of their family. For many years, Chesteen served as a deacon at Colonial Heights Assembly of God and Petersburg First Assembly of God. His greatest legacy is his steadfast faith in God, a quiet faith that nevertheless spoke volumes to those who knew him. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Roselyn "Jo" Snyder Smith; his six children: Vicki Manuel of Colonial Heights; Scott Smith of Frankford, Delaware; Shawn Smith of Richmond; Sarah Hamaker of Fairfax; Christina Lynch of Chester; and Christopher Smith of Baskerville, as well as nine grandchildren, Joshua Smith, Torin Smith, Hannah Smith, Nicole Manuel, Naomi Hamaker, Leah Hamaker, Micah Hamaker, Silas Hamaker and Zoey Lynch; two great-grandchildren, Adriana Smith and Tavon Geffrard; and his sister, Betty Crowe of Morton, New York. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at Petersburg First Assembly of God, 25213 Ferndale Road, Petersburg, Virginia, with the Reverend Dwayne Walker officiating. The family will receive friends an hour prior to service from 10-11:00 a.m. Reception to follow the service. Interment will be private. Arrangements are being handled by the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Smalls Funeral Home & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. The family gives heartfelt thanks to the staff at Dunlop Farms in the Alzheimer's Magnolia Unit and At Home Hospice for their excellent care and compassion while Chesteen was a resident.
