Clifton Sutherland Clay, 90 of DeWitt, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. Born September 4, 1932, in Dinwiddie, VA he was the son of the late James and Sadie Clay and was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Louise Bone Clay; three sisters, Mary Graves, Inez Bennett, and Alice Green; and two brothers, James Clay and Aubrey Clay. Clifton was a member of Central Baptist Church in Church Road, Va.
He is survived by his two sons, Jerry Clay (Cindy) and Larry Clay (Debbie); five grandchildren, Michael Clay (Jesse), Justin Clay (Kristen), Hunter Clay (Heather), Brandi Atkins (Brad), and Hayley Clay; six great-grandchildren, Addyson Clay, Ashlynn Clay, Brookelynn Atkins, Holden Clay, Breann Atkins, and Huntleigh Clay; niece, Susan Thomson (John); and nephew, Brian Steffen. Clifton was known as “Papa” to his family and will be missed by all who knew him.
The Clay family would like to express their gratitude to the caregivers of the Dinwiddie Health and Rehabilitation Center, as well as James River Hospice. We were blessed with their support and guidance during his time of need.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 13, 2023 in the mausoleum in Southlawn Memorial Park, 1911 Birdsong Road, S. Prince George. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Central Baptist Church, 6405 Courthouse Road, Church Road, Va. 23833. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Crater Road Chapel of E.
