Chester

Cynthia "Cindy" James Bruce, 64, of Chester, Virginia, passed away at home on August 23, 2023 surrounded by her family. Cindy was born in Petersburg, to the late Allen and Marjorie J. James of Colonial Heights.  She is survived by her beloved husband, Edward Carroll Bruce, and two sisters, Susan J. Thompson and Cathy J. Fisher (Dan), all from Chester. She also leaves behind her nephews and niece, Jeffrey M. Thompson, Mark P. Thompson (Ashley), Sarah F. Tallakson (Eric), and Eric D. Fisher; stepchildren, Edward P. Bruce, Erin B. Samuels (Jack), Kristen B. Baietti (Walter), and Travis Bruce (Hannah); and step grandchildren, Millie Rose, Marielle, Webby, and Quinn.

Cindy graduated from Colonial Heights High School in 1976 and Virginia Commonwealth University in 1980. She began her teaching career of 36 years, teaching the 5th grade at Tussing Elementary in Colonial Heights. She impacted and inspired countless students where she received the Teacher of the Year award.

Cindy was a longtime member of Swift Creek Baptist Church in Colonial Heights, where she attended Sunday School and was an integral part in the life of the church. Cindy traveled to different churches to offer testimony of God’s grace during her 8-year battle with cancer. During the past three years, she embraced her passion for the Word of God by conducting Bible studies in her home for her friends and family.

Her sense of humor and wit were unmatched by anyone. She made friends easily and has maintained long and faithful friendships as well as the admiration from devoted students.

Cindy was a sacred treasure to those of us who knew and loved her. Fly high sweet angel… you have earned those wings.
