D. Graham McBryde Jr., 80, of Colonial Heights, passed away on Monday, April 14, 2014 at Southside Regional Medical Center. He was born October 5, 1933 to the late Douglas Graham McBryde Sr. and Eva Julia Taylor McBryde, and was preceded in death by a brother, Buddy McBryde. Graham was a United States Air Force veteran, a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, and the American Legion. At the age of 16, Graham left home on a bus to attend Mississippi State University where he earned a degree in Petroleum Engineering. Graham also worked as a meteorologist in the US Air Force, and as a farmer, math teacher, NASA scientist, and held various jobs in the defense industry as a civil servant and contractor and recently retired after many years of service as a Systems Analyst from Fort Belvoir. Mr. McBryde is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mona Grey McBryde; sons, Lee Douglas McBryde and wife, Michelle of Mount Airy, Maryland, Lamar Graham McBryde and wife, Tami of Palm Bay, Florida, Stephen Hunter McBryde and wife, Beth of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Daniel Taylor McBryde and wife, Elizabeth of Colonial Heights; fourteen grandchildren, Evan, Ethan, Parker, Connor, Amelia, Hunter, Shelby, Kelsey, Taylor, Matthew, Amanda, Shannon, Joshua, and Cassie; a brother, Ray McBryde and wife, Donna of Trinity, Texas; a sister, Sylvia Passmore and husband, Bill of Marble Falls, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 18, 2014 at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, 3110 Greenwood Avenue, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834 with the Reverend Dr. Andy Brockelman officiating. Interment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 17, 2014 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Lottie Moon Missions Fund.
