David Thurman Jr.

THURMAN, David M., Jr., 86, of Colonial Heights, died December 26, 2016. He was born on August 10, 1930, during the Great Depression, the first born of Adelaide W. and David M. Thurman, Sr. The oldest of six children, he treasured his childhood growing up in the Highland Park neighborhood of Richmond. He was proud to have attended high school at John Marshall High School and loved being a member of the Cadet Corps in F Company. This influenced him to join the U. S. Marine Corps, where he served during the Korean War. After active duty, he remained in the Marine Reserves for a total of twenty years. He began his career as a salesman for Tidewater Supply and was retired from Industrial Supply Corp. His customers became valued friends throughout his life. He continued his support for veterans and those in the service by joining American Legion Post 284 in Colonial Heights where he found good fellowship and friends. In his retirement, he enjoyed playing golf with the Colonial Heights Golf Association and following University of Virginia football. Dave was an avid reader and frequent visitor to Civil War sites, parks and monuments throughout the region. He will be missed and fondly remembered by his wife of 42 years, Carol; his children, Rosemarie Thurman (Raymond Brinkman), David "Sandy" Thurman (Dina), Patty Brown (Gary d. 2014), Lynn Sadusky (Ron), Ray Thurman and Kim Bollinger (Scott); grandchildren, Amanda, Kayla, Emory and Sean; great-grandchild, Savannah; brother and sisters, Robert Thurman (Mannette d. 1995), Mary Lois (Albert Kay) Atkinson, and Bettie (Ron) Stacy, many nieces and nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Richard and Dennis. A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held at 3 p.m. on March 16th at the American Legion Post 284 in Colonial Heights, Virginia.
