Dolores Benson Slachter, 89, of Colonial Heights passed away on Saturday, March 29, 2025. Born August 23, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Neil T. and Edna Norton Benson, and was also preceded in death by her sisters, Ruth Benson Payne and Irene Benson Jackowski.
A devoted member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Dolores was a Charter member and dedicated much of her life to serving her community. She began her career as an accountant at VEPCO in Charlottesville, later moving to Colonial Heights, where she found her true calling as a daycare teacher at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, a role she lovingly held for nearly 30 years before retiring.
Beyond her professional life, Dolores found joy in the simple pleasures. She had a deep love for fishing on the Rappahannock River in Deltaville, especially at Butler’s Hole, where she made countless memories. She was also an avid traveler, especially when it came to going on cruises, always ready for the next adventure at sea. However, her greatest joy came from spending time with her family, particularly her grandchildren, whom she adored.
She is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, Howard Judd Slachter; son, Wade Judd Slachter and wife, Phyllis; two beloved grandchildren, Holland Slachter, Kendall Slachter; and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members.
A private interment will take place in Maplewood Cemetery in Gordonsville, Virginia at a later date. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. Online condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.
