Donald "Donnie" M. Burton, 75, of Chesterfield peacefully passed away on Monday, August 1, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. Born September 30, 1947, he was the son of the late Robert Edward and Elizabeth O’Kennon Burton, and was also preceded in death by two brothers, Robert “Bobby” Burton and William “Billy” Burton.
Donnie was a part of the 1966 graduating class of Matoaca High School, where he participated in track, football, and baseball.
He served his country honorably as a United States Army veteran during the Vietnam War, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to his nation.
Many will remember him from his years as a forklift operator at Brown and Williamson. Later, he embarked on a fulfilling career journey as a dedicated Team Leader of grounds maintenance for Chesterfield County Public School System, retiring after 23 years. His hard work and leadership made a lasting impact on the schools and the lives of countless students.
Donnie's dedication extended beyond the school system. He was not only a dedicated worker but also a dedicated family man. Donnie found immense joy in spending time with his family, particularly his beloved grandchildren, who held a special place in his heart.
An avid outdoorsman, Donnie discovered solace in the embrace of nature. Whether it was hunting in the early morning mist, casting a line into the tranquil waters, or simply enjoying the beauty of the world around him, he found peace and contentment in the great outdoors. His membership in the American Legion Post 284 and the Matoaca Sportsman Club reflected his camaraderie with fellow veterans and outdoor enthusiasts.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Bonnie Whitaker Burton; daughter, Stacy Burton Whaley and husband, Todd; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Rayne Burton Whaley and Hunter Corbin Burton Whaley; and numerous nieces, nephews, other extended family members and many cherished friends.
