Dorothy (Dot) Tinney Mizelle, 85, died at home, peacefully in her sleep Monday, August 14, 2023. Dot is preceded in death by her parents Robert W. and Anna J. Tinney and her brother, James W. Tinney, and his wife Anne.
Dot is survived by two sons, Steve Edwards, of the home, and Ken Edwards and his wife, Susan of Charlotte, NC. Additionally, she is survived by a granddaughter, Anna Edwards New and her husband, Grant of Beaufort, SC, a brother, Mike Tinney and his wife, Charlene, of Laurel, Maryland, two nephews, Brad Tinney and his wife, Julia and Daniel Tinney and his wife, Kelly.
Born in Washington, DC in 1938, her family moved to Virginia shortly thereafter. Dot graduated from Petersburg High School in 1955 and attended Stuart Circle Hospital School of Nursing, graduating as a registered nurse.
Following graduation, she began working at Petersburg General Hospital where she remained for 42 years. Working in every department of the hospital at some point during her tenure, she retired as the Patient Care Supervisor. Dottie was proud to be a nurse and thankful to have cared for so many over the years.
She also used her gifts of service and caregiving as she proudly and enthusiastically served as a volunteer with the Ettrick-Matoaca Rescue Squad.
She enjoyed many activities including bowling, playing cards, jigsaw, and crossword puzzles, traveling, and her favorite, reading. Dot was a voracious reader.
As a member of Community of Christ Church – Chester Congregation, Dot served in different capacities such as housing and feeding the homeless and hosting Ft. Lee personnel for the Thanksgiving meal.
She enjoyed going to Myrtle Beach, her girlfriends in the “Golden Girls” and the Retired Nurses group. Her family will always cherish and remember the fun they had making her laugh, the wonderful food she made, and her generous, giving spirit. She will be deeply missed.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 21, 2023 in the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. Interment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park, South Prince George, Virginia. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
