Dorothy "Hookie" Hargis

Dorothy “Hookie” Dobyns Hargis, 80, of Colonial Heights, Virginia, passed away surrounded by family on Saturday, June 25, 2022. Born on January 21, 1942, in Norfolk, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Ray Whitfield Dobyns and Dorothy Belle Dobyns. She is also preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Harry Burns Hargis; her son, Harry Whitfield Hargis; grandson, Vaughn Whitfield Hargis;  her sister, Helen Rickard and  special friend, George Baxter.

Hookie started working in the catering business, and then went on to become a dedicated Deputy Sheriff for Colonial Heights Sheriff's Office for 15 years. She also was a Sentinel Volunteer with the Colonial Heights Police Department, a member of the Citizens Police Association, and the Swift Creek Woman’s Club.

She is survived by her sons, William A. Hargis and wife, Kirsten of Winchester, and Charles L. Hargis and wife, Gretchen of Kitty Hawk, NC; grandchildren, Eric L. Wilhelm (Jesse), Lachlan B. Hargis (Becca), Grace Hargis (Travis), Sarah J. Hargis (Nevin Harker), Rives W. Hargis, Tracy E. Hargis, Keirry H. Hargis, Ty E. Hargis, and Raye Ann Yoo (Jin-Woo Yoo); great-grandchildren, Summer Wilhelm, Devin Wilhelm, Alice Wilhelm, Nolan Wilhelm, Charlotte A. Harker, and Leonidas Herbst-Hargis; niece, Susan Rickard; nephew, David Rickard (Judy); great-niece, Sydney; dear family friends, Lewis and Christie Archileti and their children, Joshua and Tiffany Elling; and best friend of over 70 years, Catherine Vernon.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, July 2, 2022, at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made out to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), 199 Water Street, 11th Floor, New York, NY 10038.
