Dr. Gilbert

Dr. Lowell H. Gilbert, of Colonial Heights, Virginia went to his eternal rest Thursday, November 10, 2016. He is survived by his wife, Deborah L, and daughters, Amy Selfe and husband Stephen, and Kimberley Boyd and husband Tracy. He leaves four grandchildren, Kayla and Lauren Boyd, and Peyton and Noah Selfe. He is also survived by his sisters, Carleton Harper and husband Duane, and Lorraine Harlow and husband Harold, and his brothers Dr. Edward Gilbert and wife Argie, and Marcus Gilbert and wife Dorothy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Simon and Eva Gilbert, his brother Dr. Fulton Gilbert, and his sisters, Eleanor VanGilder and Rhoda York. Dr. Gilbert served the Colonial Heights community and the State of Virginia by providing eye care as an optometrist for over 40 years. During his career, Dr. Gilbert served as the President of the Virginia Optometric Association and President of the Southeastern Congress of Optometry International in Atlanta, Georgia. He was honored as the Virginia Optometrist of the Year in 1989, and he received the Distinguished Achievement Award in 1998 from the Virginia Optometric Association. He was appointed and served on the Board of Optometry, the Board of Health Professions for the State of Virginia, and the National Board of Examiners of Optometry. Locally, he was a lifetime member and Past President of the Colonial Heights Lions Club, Past President of the Colonial Heights Jaycees. and the Past President of the Colonial Heights Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Gilbert served as a Captain in the United States Army from 1966-68 at the US Army Hospital in Fort Jackson, SC. Dr. Gilbert was a member of Pleasant Hill Christian Church in Gasburg, Virginia. He enjoyed his home on Lake Gaston and spent many happy hours fishing there as well as fishing in the Florida Keys. A celebration of life service will be held on November 20, 2016 at 3:00 pm at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church 3110 Greenwood Avenue Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834 with visitation to follow. Interment service will be private. Donations may be made to Pleasant Hill Christian Church, 175 Ankum Road, Gasburg, VA 23857 or to Crater Community Hospice, 3916 S Crater Road, Petersburg, VA 23805. The family is being served by the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory 2033 Boulevard Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834.
