Earl Eldridge Noel II, of Petersburg died Thursday, July 28, 2011, born October 18, 1938 in Newport News, Virginia, to father, Earl Eldridge Noel and mother, Virginia Goodrich Noel. He spent much of his childhood in Clifton Forge, Virginia, and much of his adult life in Petersburg, Virginia. For 18 years, he worked as a civil engineering designer for the Virginia Department of Transportation. For the remainder of his career, he worked for private firms doing highway design. As a career highlight, he helped design the Pocahontas Hwy I-895/I-95 stack interchange flyover crossing the James River in Richmond. He taught drafting courses at Petersburg High School and John Tyler Community College. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion, the Eagles Club, and the Moose Lodge, and served as an officer of the Cavalier Athletic Club in Petersburg. He was an avid model builder and train enthusiast. He is survived by a son, Steven Earl Noel and family; a daughter, Elisabeth Noel Whitlock and family; step-mother, Elisabeth Eller Noel; and close friends, Eugene Wilson and Diane Slaughter Noel-Wilson. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 2, 2011 in the Petersburg Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 3935 S. Crater Road with Deacon Edward Hanzlik officiating. Interment will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 3, 2011 in Mountain View Cemetery, Clifton Forge, Virginia. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, August 1, 2011 at the Petersburg Chapel.
