Edith Elder

Edith Overby Elder, 88, of Colonial Heights, passed away on Friday, May 20, 2016 at her residence. Born in Prince George County, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Elsie Emory Overby; and was also preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Joseph Thomas Elder Jr.; a grandson, Michael G. Elder Jr.; and a brother, Henry Overby Jr. Mrs. Elder was a former member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Petersburg, VA and was also a former member of the Dixie Bowman Archery Club. She is survived by one daughter, Jo Ann E. Mimms and husband, Pace of Manteo, North Carolina; a son, Michael Gene Elder and wife, Rudy of Hopewell; six grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; one sister-in-law, Helen Mattia of Colonial Heights; and a cousin, Katherine Whitchurch of Petersburg. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 26, 2016 in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George, Virginia, with the Reverend J.R. DeHart officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard.
