Elizabeth "Betsy" Sirry Bishop, 85, of Shawnee, KS died September 24, 2018. She was the daughter of the late Eugene Samuel Sirry and Susie Avery Sirry, and the widow of Ernest Garland Bishop, Jr. She and Garland were married over 50 years. Mrs. Bishop was a former resident of Colonial Heights, Dinwiddie and Chesterfield Counties. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Cecil, James, and Gerald Sirry and five sisters, Pearl Coleman, Louise Green, Ruby Belcher, Marie Ragsdale, and Geraldine Traylor.
Mrs. Bishop was a member of West End Baptist Church, a devoted wife, a beloved mother, and a cherished grandmother also known as "the Mema". She was an honor graduate of Petersburg High School, Class of 1950. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Saint Leo College and received her MBA from Florida Institute of Technology. She retired from civil service at Fort Lee, VA with over 42 years of service from the U. S. Army Combined Arms Support Command. She was a Supervisory Program Analyst & Branch Chief of Personnel, Training & Manpower in the Resources Management Directorate. She received numerous service awards during her tenure including the Achievement Medal for Civil Service. After retirement, she served as a substitute teacher in the Dinwiddie County School System for over seven years. Before moving to Kansas, she was a member of the Southside Regional Chapter Senior Circle, American legion Post 284 Auxiliary, TOPS, 49ers of PHS, AARP, and VIPs at Colonial Heights Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening, knitting, crocheting, reading, playing computer games and bingo, traveling, and especially helping others.
Mrs. Bishop is survived by a daughter, Sandra Kay "Sandy" Underhill and son-in-law, Raymond Louis Underhill, (who was like a son to her), two dear granddaughters, Dr. Katie E. Underhill, and Lara U. Mabry , a PhD candidate; grandson-in-laws Bradley N. Seitz and Jared A. Mabry; one sister-in-law Joyce Ragsdale Bishop and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 4 PM on October 27, 2018 in the chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights; followed by visitation with the family. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Dinwiddie Animal Shelter, P.O. Drawer 70, Dinwiddie, VA 23841; or West End Baptist Church, 6506 Boydton Plank Road, Petersburg, VA 23803; or a charity of your choice.
