Elizabeth Gayle Hatcher Rhoads, 60, of Chester passed on peacefully on Wednesday, September 27, 2023. Born April 23, 1963, she was the daughter of Billy Preston and Phyllis Gayle Hatcher.

Elizabeth was an active member of several churches throughout her life, where her presence was a source of inspiration for many. Her faith was not just a belief but a way of life. She actively participated in church activities, including the AWANAS program and teaching Sunday school classes, where she shared her deep spiritual insights with the congregation. Passionate about sign language, Elizabeth dedicated her free time to volunteering at her church and within the deaf community, where she served as a bridge of communication and support for those in need. Most recently, she attended Varina Baptist Church.

In her professional life, Elizabeth was a registered nurse with an impressive 30 years of experience. She worked tirelessly in critical care units at numerous hospitals throughout the area, demonstrating a commitment to the health and well-being of her patients that was unparalleled. Her unwavering dedication and exceptional nursing skills allowed her to ascend through the ranks, ultimately achieving the esteemed position of Director of the Intensive Care Unit, where she tirelessly led her team in providing top-notch patient care.. Her passion for nursing extended beyond the hospital walls as she completed her parish nursing certification, furthering her ability to serve her community.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Elizabeth had a profound love for animals and spent countless hours crocheting and crafting. Her creativity knew no bounds, and she used her talents to bring joy to those around her. Her compassionate heart led her to establish numerous support groups, including the Virginia EDS/Chiari/Syringaylego/TC/IIH/POTS support group, Virginia Love of Boxers, and Virginia Love of Parrots among others. She had an incredible gift for connecting with people and providing comfort and understanding to those in need.

Her influence extended far and wide within her community, where she touched the lives of countless individuals through her selfless acts of kindness. Her love for helping others was evident in everything she did, and her generosity knew no bounds.

Above all else, Elizabeth cherished her family. Her love for them was immeasurable, and she leaves behind cherished memories that will forever be held dear by those who had the privilege of knowing her.

She is survived by her loving husband of 29 years, John Paul Rhoads, Sr.; children, Sarah Elizabeth Nelson, Jacob Wayne Rhoads, John Paul Rhoads, Jr.; six grandchildren, Lee Nelson, Sophia Rhoads, Zacariah Rhoads, Makayla Rhoads, Aireana Rhoads, Yuna Rhoads; parents, Billy Preston and Phyllis Gayle Hatcher; siblings, Mark Hatcher and wife, Betsy, Shawn Hatcher and wife, Karen; and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 4, 2023 in the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. Interment will follow in Bermuda Memorial Park. The family will receive friends an hour and a half before the funeral from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the World Arnold Chiari Malformation Association, 31 Newtown Woods Road, Newtown Square, PA, or Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Research Foundation, 1829 Reisterstown Road, Suite 100 Pikesville, MD 21208.
