Elsie Sheppe Burnham

Elsie Sheppe Burnham passed away on February 5, 2025, leaving behind cherished memories for those who knew her. Born on January 24, 1940, Elsie’s arrival was marked by a historic snowfall in Hopewell, earning her the affectionate title of "Hopewell's Snow Baby." The folks in town came out and dug a way for the ambulance to get her mother to the hospital. She pursued her education at Lynchburg College and dedicated over 30 years to teaching, with much of her career spent at Lakeview Elementary. Elsie was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Hopewell. Elsie found joy in traveling, spending many years at Lakewood Campground in Myrtle Beach. Later, she discovered a love for bluegrass festivals at Graves Mountain, where the staff became like family to her. She especially enjoyed staying at the lodge and watching for bears in the evenings. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Gladys Sheppe, and her brother, Walter Sheppe Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Kristi Renshaw (Michael); her son, Kevin Burnham; and her grandchildren, Mallory Renshaw, Caesan Renshaw, Caedan Renshaw, and Caelan Renshaw. Her family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Petersburg Home for Ladies for their exceptional care and kindness over the past three years. A celebration of Elsie’s life will take place on February 12, 2025, 2:00 p.m. at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory 2033 Boulevard Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834. Burial will be Private. The family will receive friends Wednesday, one hour prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Colonial Heights SPCA in her memory.
