Elsie Dunnavant Slate, 80, of Colonial Heights, passed away on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at Thomas Johns Cancer Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Howard T. and Ruth Pettus Dunnavant, and was preceded in death by two sisters, Velma V. Dunnavant and Ruby Dunnavant Crowder. Mrs. Slate was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, where she was active in the WMU, Faye Burkwall Circle. She was a former member of the Oak Hill Garden Club. She is survived by her husband, William Milton Slate Sr.; a son, William M. Slate Jr. and wife, Christine McFadden Slate of Powhatan; a daughter, Deborah Slate Howard and husband, Gregory D. Howard of Danville; a granddaughter, Karina Grace Howard; a sister, Ruth Dunnavant Heironimus and husband, Walter Heironimus Jr. of St. Petersburg, Florida; numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 2010 in the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard with the Reverend Fred Adkins officiating. Interment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday (tonight) at the funeral home.
