Emily Johnson Walker

Emily Johnson Walker, 87, of Colonial Heights passed away on Friday, January 3, 2025. Born March 31, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Louise Johnson, and was also preceded in death by her husband, Raenord B. Walker.

Emily was a faithful member of Highland United Methodist Church and Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, where she shared her deep faith and spirit of service with her congregations. She was a proud graduate of Longwood College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics.

Emily dedicated seven years to teaching Home Economics at Midlothian High School and Colonial Heights High School, inspiring students with her passion for practical skills and creative expression. Her professional journey also included roles as a trainer at Thalhimers and a non-credit coordinator at John Tyler Community College, where she helped adults expand their knowledge and pursue lifelong learning.

Her love for nature and beauty was evident in her longtime membership and past presidency of the Violet Bank Garden Club, where she worked to enhance her community. She also served as a member of the Colonial Heights Beautification Committee, helping to preserve and improve the local environment. A talented instructor, Emily shared her expertise in the Japanese art of flower arranging as a teacher with the Ikebana and Ikenobo Society of Virginia.

Emily found great joy in traveling and cherished her time spent at the beach in Corolla, North Carolina, where the tranquility of the ocean brought her peace and happiness.

She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Walker; son, Dave Walker (Kim); grandchildren, Olivia and Nick Walker; cousin, George Redd (Jane); sister-in-law, Kay Walker; niece and nephew, Catherine and Bill Walker. She also leaves behind many cherished friends, for whom she deeply cared. The family would like to extended their deepest gratitude to all the staff in memory care at the Dunlop House for their extraordinary care of Mrs. Walker during her time of need.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 9, 2025 at Highland United Methodist Church, 125 E. Westover Avenue, Colonial Heights, VA 23834. Interment will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 10, 2025 in Mount Pleasant Methodist Church Cemetery, 5083 Mt. Pleasant Road, Meherrin, Virginia 23954.
