Emma Covington

May 28, 1922 — August 13, 2015

Emma Catherine Laushey Covington, 93, died at Hospice Atlanta (GA) after a brief illness on August 13, 2015. Catherine was born on May 28, 1922 in Colonial Heights, VA, daughter of Clyde S. Laushey, Sr. and Blanche O'Kennon Laushey. She graduated from Mary Washington College in 1943, and married Tom Covington on March 25, 1944. Catherine was a resident of Clairmont Place, Decatur, GA, a long-time, devoted member of Central Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, and the loving wife of the late Thomas Covington, Jr. her childhood sweetheart with whom she enjoyed a long and happy marriage of sixty four years. Her immediate family includes her daughter, Ann Covington Hunter and husband, Rodney J. Hunter; their son and daughter-in-law David and Vanessa Gabriele Hunter; Catherine's late daughter Carolyn Covington Parks and husband John David (J.D.) Parks; their two sons and daughters-in-law, Geoffrey and Heather Parks and a step -great granddaughter, Bailey Fausnaugh; and Matthew and Kimberlie Parks and great grandsons Tyler, Dylan, and Dayton Parks; and other extended family. Tom and Catherine moved with their family from Virginia to Atlanta in 1961. Tom was a New York Life agent and Catherine worked as homemaker and actively served with Tom in a variety of volunteer capacities at Central Church, including many years as a Sunday school teacher where she introduced a generation of little children to the love and stories of the Christian faith and is fondly remembered by scores of her former students. Over many years the couple traveled widely, enjoying numerous trips in the U.S. and abroad. Catherine loved classical music and regularly attended symphony concerts and classical programs in Atlanta. Loved and remembered for her plucky spirit, lively wit, glorious smile, vibrant Christian faith, dedication to her church, and her love and concern for everyone she knew, Catherine is deeply missed by her family, fellow residents at Clairmont Place and all the members and friends of Central Presbyterian Church. A service of celebration and remembrance was held at Central on Sunday, August 30, 2015. A graveside service will be held at Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg on Saturday, April 16 at 1:00 PM. Gifts in her memory may be given to the Fund for Pastoral Leadership of Central Presbyterian Church, or to the Central Outreach and Advocacy Center, both located at 201 Washington Street, SW, Atlanta, GA 30303.
