Ernest Joseph "Joe" Gibson

Ernest Joseph “Joe” Gibson, 80, passed away October 8, 2023 at Southside Regional Medical Center after an extended struggle with COPD. He was born March 15, 1943 in Arthurdale, West Virginia to the late Earnest Dale Gibson and Josephine Powroznik Gibson of Morgantown, West Virginia. He was also preceded in death by his brother Andrew Paul Gibson of Shinnston, West Virginia. Ernest moved to Hopewell, Virginia in 1961 where he was employed at Continental Can Company (Smurfitt Stone) for 41 years.  He was an avid NASCAR fan for many years and loved watching West Virginia football, basketball, and baseball.  He is survived by his wife of 59 years Carole Thompson Gibson and son Robert Dale “Bobby” Gibson of Matoaca, daughters Michele Harris and husband Brett, Kristen Perkinson and husband Scott all of Sutherland, cherished granddaughter Sarah Harris of Sutherland, sister Monica Gibson, sister in-law Phyllis Gibson of Shinnston, West Virginia and numerous nieces and nephews as well as extended family and cousins.  A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 13, 2023 in East Matoaca Cemetery Matoaca, Virginia with the Reverend Larry House officiating.  The family will receive friends Thursday, October 12, 2023 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E.
