Ethel Daniel

September 14, 1931 — March 24, 2014

Ethel Wells Daniel, 82, of Dinwiddie County, joined her husband William B. Daniel at their Lord's table on Monday, March 24, 2014. She was a lifelong member of Kenwood United Methodist Church and loved her church and church family. For many years she owned and ran Scott's Retreat, a summer day camp for children as well as a venue for church and business picnics and other social events. She and her husband later owned and operated the Homeplace Restaurant in Dinwiddie County for many years. Both were located on the property on which she was born. They never met a stranger and were always willing to help anyone in need. She loved to cook to prepare meals for others which was her way of showing her care and love for others. Any of the many people who sampled her dishes will attest that she was a wonderful cook, preparing almost all of her delicious food from scratch. She loved her family dearly and each family member held a special place in her heart. Even though she suffered from dementia late in life, she always remembered each member of her family and enjoyed nothing more than having them near. She is survived by her devoted children, William B. Daniel Jr. (Ann), Thomas K. Daniel (Margie), Beverly D. Lawson (Jack), and Janice D. Johnson (Phillip); seven grandchildren, William F. "Billy" Daniel, Kimberley D. Davis (Jeremy), Bevin L. Irby (Claiborne), Timothy B. Daniel, Kevin W. Townsend (Candice), Kelly E. Lawson, and Mathew Daniel; eleven great-grandchildren; two surviving sisters, Rebecca W. Avery and Virginia W. Hargrave; and a brother, John B. Wells. The family would like to thank her very special caregivers for all their love and support during the most difficult years of her life following her husband's death in 2007. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 28, 2014 at Kenwood United Methodist Church, 25200 Ritchie Avenue, N. Dinwiddie, Virginia 23803 with the Reverend Mary K. Dadisman officiating. Burial to follow in Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery, McKenney. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday March 27, 2014 at the Petersburg Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 3935 South Crater Road. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Kenwood United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer's Association, 4600 Cox Road, Suite 130, Glen Allen, Virginia 23060.
