Evelyn Jasper

July 22, 1933 — June 16, 2012

Joyce Jasper, age 78, passed away peacefully at her home in Chester, VA on Saturday evening, June 16, 2012. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Jennings and Evelyn Wylie Cook, her only sibling, a sister, Corinne Cook Muncy and her loving husband, Charles Allen Jasper, Sr. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Bill Jasper and wife Carol of Jacksonville, Florida, Joseph Nicholas "Nick" Jasper of Colonial Heights, Charles Allen Jasper, Jr of Prince George, Evelyn Ross and husband Allen of Chester, and MaryKay Hornberger and husband Steve also of Chester; along with six grandchildren: Lauren and Michael Jasper of Jacksonville, Fl, Amanda and Adam Ross, and Corinne and Michelle Hornberger all of Chester. She also leaves behind many wonderful and cherished extended family and friends. Mrs. Jasper grew up during the depression and graduated from Chuckatuck High School in Driver, VA in 1949 and was her class valedictorian. She went on to graduate in 1953 from what was known then as the "Women's College" and is now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She graduated with a degree in History and went on to teach High School; first in Portsmouth and later at Thomas Dale High School in Chester, VA from 1955-1960. She married the "boy next door" in 1954 and was a devoted wife to him for 51 years until his death in 2007. Mrs. Jasper was a true housewife of the fifties. Her life revolved around her family and she was a rock to the Jasper family. Although she was a quiet, private person by nature, God saw fit for her to be a life-long companion to an out-going husband and children who were made all the better by her constant love and devotion to them. She was a faithful member of Ivey Memorial United Methodist Church for over 40 years where she served on numerous committees and in various capacities. Her special love was teaching Senior High Sunday School for many, many years. For those who knew and loved her, it would be fitting to raise a cup of coffee in her honor. In her later years, she loved to read and to meet up with friends. She had a special love and fondness for the Chester Community. She was a faithful member of Dale's Water Aerobics class at the Chester YMCA for many years. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday June 20, 2012 in Ivey Memorial United Methodist Church 17120 Jefferson Davis Highway Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834, with the Reverend Daniel K. Ivey officiating. Interment Sunset Memorial Park Chester, Virginia. The family will receive friends Tuesday June 19, 2012 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory 2033 Boulevard. Due to the fitness and fellowship she received at the Y that extended her life for many extra years and because she loved the Chester community so much, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in her honor to the Chester YMCA 3011 W. Hundred Road Chester, VA 23831.
